Our Amphibian Visitor

071505.jpg

I saw something moving out of the corner of my eye this morning. When I turned around to take a look it scurried under a cabinet. I was a little freaked because I thought it was a giant, Texas-sized millipede. After much screaming and jumping around by me and the kids we managed to corner and catch the little guy. It turned out to be a very cute Barred Tiger Salamander. It was lucky it was so cute becuase it would have ended up in San Antonio's sewer system if it had been a millipede. Instead we kindly escorted our visitor out the front door.

I am still a little freaked: I want to know how something that large got into my house. And who knows what will show up next!

Ah, yes, the little 'geckoes.' They're everywhere, and you'll probably see tons more of them. And little green anoles, too. Both are super bug-eaters.

FWIW, I never saw a tarantula during my 20-odd years in SA. Scorpions, unfortunately, I've known a few.

For in-the-house-visitors, this has got to be the best post I've ever read:

Check it out and be thankful!!!

The gecko is MUCH cuter (although I would still be freaking out!)

Oh, we have little lizards that look JUST LIKE THAT except they are a dull green here in FL... I don't think too much of them as I've seen them since I was 5 years old and frequently came to FL to visit my grandmother (I've lived here 11 years)- though I'd rather they stay outside! But the first time a friend came to visit from Ohio she FLIPPED OUT when she saw one - she'd never known about them before and did NOT like them!!!

OOOOOHHHHHH.... I just clicked on your link to these guys - SIX to EIGHT inches long??!!! Our little guys are only 1-2 inches long - OKAY, if they were SIX to EIGHT inches long I'd be a bit unnerved with one in my house!!!

That is cool. I'd have to pay a lot of money for something like that in Indiana. :)
