The Birch Bungaloo

While flipping through a magazine at the dentist's office yesterday I saw this toy tree house. Wow $1350! But the big surprise was that it was designed and made by an old friend of ours. Good for him.

Oh, Boo Hoo!

Eric received word today that yes, he will be going to Commisioned Officer Training. He is leaving in 11 days and will be gone for an entire month. Wah! We have never been apart for more than a week in the 10.5 years that we have been married.

As I said earlier, I know it could be a lot worse. It's only Alabama and it's only for 31 days. I have started a mental list of projects that will make the time fly and I am thinking about a possible trip to visit family in Kansas City to break up the month.

The Museum Visit that Topped all Museum Visits

starwars1.jpg

When I heard that a replica of the Millenium Falcon was on display at the Boston's Museum of Science and that we were moving back to the East Coast, I knew a trip up north would have to happen sooner than later. The perfect opportunity fell into our lap when Eric's commander okayed a trip to Boston's Yankee Dental so he could earn some continuing ed credits. Even better, it was a business trip so our lodging and mileage were covered.

A year ago when someone (mostly Colleen) would mention Star Wars I didn't really get it. I didn't dislike any of the movies, I just really didn't have much of an opinion. Then Eric bought the original three and we started watching them alot. He eventually brought home the next two and I started to really get into it. By this time my sons, especially Theo, were living and breathing Star Wars. I was actually looking forward to the release of the Revenge of the Sith onto DVD last November since I had missed it in the theater. Though Empire is my favorite.

The exhibit was so much fun. Not only do you get to sit inside the Millenium Falcon, you can see many of the original costumes on display. They had great exhibits on the engineering behind many of the machines in the movies and how they have inspired real technology.

Stuff Portrait Friday

I'm playing Stuff Portrait Friday today.

Under My Bed:

Yes, that's right: there is only a pen and some dust under my bed. Give it some time though. We haven't lived here very long and it's a brand new bed. It was delivered only a week ago.

My Stereo:

How much longer before the cd is obsolete?

My Pots and Pans:

These are relatively new. We received an aluminum set nearly 11 years ago as a wedding present. They were starting to show their age and plus I wanted a safer set. I'm kind of nutty like that.

The Bad News

Eric's commander has decided that Eric really needs to go to Commisioned Officer Training. He may be leaving in 3 weeks to go to Alabama for a month. He was actually supposed to go last spring but the dates overlapped with the end of dental school. We mistakenly assumed that he was off the hook. Lesson: never assume anything with the military.

It's going to be a big bummer to be apart but I really can't complain too loudly. So many of my neighbors' husbands are in much more dangerous places and for so much longer. I'm so thankful that Eric is not at all deployable.

The Good News

2 weeks ago Eric finally received his license to practice dentistry. When he decided to resign from the Perio program back in November he immediately applied for a New Jersey dental license. (Since he had been in a residency program he didn't need one) Well, nearly 3 months later the State Board of New Jersey finally decided to grant it. Apparently these things take time to get shuffled from desk to desk, though they had no problem cashing our check back in December.

Also living on base is really good. First of all, you can't argue with free rent and utilities. Then there are all of the children in the neighborhood. It is family housing after all. In both houses on either side of us live 2 boys- instant friends for my sons.

The best part though, is that the dental clinic is a 3 minute drive away. Eric comes home for lunch everyday and is usally home by 4:45, sometimes even earlier. And when he is home, he's really home. No more studying!

The Great News

When Eric quit Perio they told him that they were going to tack on a couple of years to his obligation. So we thought we would be committed to the Air Force until 2010. Well, Eric was reviewing his records when he saw June 2008 listed as his date of separation. He made some phone calls to verify this and it's true! We have just a little over 2 years left to our commitment!
