Sheep

The kids and I spent the earlier part of the week in Ghent, NY with Eric's parents, who rented a vacation home there. You may be aware that recently there has been a lot of rain in the Northeast. Well, in the 48 hours or so that we spent there, I think we saw rain for about 44 of them. Luckily the few clear, dry hours we had were in the middle of the day. We took advantage of the sunshine and visited the Old Chatham Sheepherding Company.
It was a beautiful small, family operation. We were able to roam through the sheep pens freely. The kids were able to pet the little lambs and we got a see a ewe with her triplets, who couldn't have been more than a half an hour old. All the while the ewe in the neighboring pen was panting and groaning with labor pains.
I do have to say that the La Leche League Leader in me felt kind of strange to see a staff person hauling in a 50 pound bag of powdered lamb formula, especially with all of the engorged udders in the place. But business is business (as they say) and Henry really did like the cheese his grandparents bought him from their little self-serve shop.

** Note: I wasn't sure if I should have used "an ewe" or "a ewe." The former sounds terrible to my ear but the latter looked really awkward in print. So I decided to let Google decide. "A ewe" won with 156,000 results versus "an ewe" which only has 38,800.
