The National Road

When reading the Sunday paper this morning I saw that the National Road turns 200 this year.

This picture was taken 11 years ago this month (when the Road was only 189 years old) in Western Maryland. Eric and I were returning home to DC after celebrating his birthday with a weekend at Deep Creek Lake, Maryland.

This bridge was part of the original National Road. Standing on the stone bridge looking to the south you can see US 40 and beyond, there lies I-70.

Interstates are great when you need to make haste. But if you have the luxury of extra time, traveling on the smaller, older roads are a wonderful way to explore.

Looks beautiful. When I went to Key West a few years ago, I took "Alligator Alley" (I-75) across the state to Miami on the way there. But on the way home I travelled US 41, one lane in each direction, through Indian Reservations and the swamps with alligators. A much more scenic route. One of my dreams is to one day drive the entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
